There’s a lot more to Mildura’s newest Indian grocery store than meets the eye.
Indian Bazaar Mildura has recently opened on the corner of Lime Avenue and Ninth Street and
owner Chirag Patel says his new venture is a “true corner shop” with a multicultural focus.
Indian Bazaar Mildura sells the finest in Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Afghan and Middle Eastern groceries, sweets and essential food products at competitive prices – with new Asian lines coming soon.
Chirag says the store stocks pantry staples of pulses and spices from around the world, as well as a variety of nibbles and snacks and a wide range of frozen items.
“It’s really multicultural,” he says.
Since the store opened in early October, Chirag has been pleasantly surprised by the interest shown by not only the local Indian community but also the wider Mildura community.
“We have a lot of Australian customers coming in asking for chutneys, spices and pulses,” he says.
“We expected a little of that, but not so much. Many people are moving towards more vegetarian foods and we have a lot of vegetarian food lines.”
Chirag says many customers are coming in with cookbooks and questions about the dishes they’re creating.
“We’re happy to help. It’s great if they’re following a book and we can give them some extra advice about the ingredients and what they can do,” he says.
“We really appreciate the support we’re getting from the Mildura community.”
