Open since: March, 2018
Previously based in South Australia, Kym and Karen were no strangers to Mildura when they chose to open their store in Mildura in 2018.
“We spent much of our youth in the region training, and training with some of the region’s top competition water skiers, many who went on to be national champions and some still are,” Kym says.
“We love to camp, fish, shoot and do water sports.”
After a career in competition water skiing, which included a stint living in Mississippi in the 1990s skiing, training, coaching and driving, competitive pistol shooting found him, both as a competitor and as a junior coach.
The couple previously traded for nearly 20 years near the General Motors Holden factory in Adelaide.
“The closure of the factory caused mass localised unemployment and hardship that directly affected custom for stores like ours in that area,” Kym says.
“With the prospect of poor trading for an unknown foreseeable future, we decided to find a new location to continue trading.”
Armed with the knowledge of Got One Mildura’s closure in 2017, Kym says they then started the search for a suitable premise to trade from.
“Mildura desperately needed a good independent tackle, camping and hunting store and so in March 2018 we opened in a great location right adjacent Woolworths and the City Heart mall,” he says.
“We know retail Australia wide continues to be tough and has its challenges but the support by locals from the day we opened has been refreshing.”
Mildura Outdoor & Tackle boasts all the major names in fishing tackle, camping, archery, hunting and spearfishing with competitive pricing.
“We regularly receive praise regarding our custom lure selection, many boutique makers are featured and many hand-crafted Australian wood lures come and go with ambition of landing that fish of a lifetime, which many do,” Kym says.
“We appreciate local custom and will work as hard as required to keep it local. We know and are told regularly by many, many folk, they simply do not like frequenting generic box stores and many have been burnt online, so we will do as required to offer a local difference with service and a smile.”
Why did you choose Mildura City Heart?
“The City Heart is a busy vibrant hub, rarely quiet, except when the weather gods are brutal. There is plentiful food, shopping and parking is available. It is safe for kids to be in whilst on school holidays, a real bonus for busy working parents.”
Other than your own store, what are your favourite shops within Mildura City Heart?
“I personally cannot go a week without a noodle top up from Mildura Noodle & Pasta Bar. Their food is awesome and offers great value. The service from the ladies in Office National is superb and it is always nice to stop in for a chat with Paige and Kat in Irresistible Hair design.”
What is Mildura/Mildura City Heart’s best kept secret?
“The City Heart’s best kept secret simply has to be ‘The Boot Scooters’ of the Mildura Country Music Festival in September-October and the Show n Shine and Easter motorsports event. The place pumps.”
